Few things are more annoying than completing a purchase expecting cashback and watching the claim get declined. The good news is that most declines have a specific, preventable cause, and understanding them helps you avoid repeats and occasionally overturn a decline. Here are the reasons portals decline cashback, in order of frequency.

Cashback tracking fails when something interrupts the journey from portal to retailer: an ad blocker, a privacy extension, a coupon code from another site, or a purchase completed days after clicking. The portal cannot prove you came through it, so it declines. The fix is procedural: disable blockers during checkout, click through immediately before buying, and avoid outside coupons entirely.

If you return an item, cancel an order, or part of an order is cancelled by the retailer, the cashback for that portion is declined or clawed back. This is legitimate, since the portal is only paid when the retailer keeps the sale. Partial returns reduce cashback proportionally, and using a gift card or store credit for part of the payment can reduce the qualifying amount.

Many portals exclude specific categories, such as gift cards, sale items, or purchases made with certain payment methods, and these exclusions are buried in terms pages. A purchase that seems eligible may be declined because one item in the basket was excluded, or because you paid with a method the portal does not track. Check exclusions before large purchases, not after.

If you believe a decline is wrong, file a claim with your order confirmation, the date and time of purchase, and any evidence you clicked through the portal. Be polite and specific, and respond promptly to follow-up questions. Portals approve a meaningful share of well-documented appeals, especially for first-time issues. If the appeal fails, treat it as a lesson for the next purchase rather than a reason to abandon cashback entirely.

Some declines have nothing to do with coupons or returns. Starting a purchase on a phone and finishing it on a laptop, switching from a browser to a retailer's app mid-checkout, or clearing cookies between click and purchase can all break the tracking chain, because the portal loses the link between your click and your order. Private browsing, VPNs, and aggressive privacy settings can have the same effect. For important purchases, use one device, one browser, and one continuous session, disable ad blockers for that retailer, and avoid opening other shopping tabs until checkout is complete. If you must switch devices, click through from the portal again on the device you will actually pay on.

A rejected appeal is not always the end. First, read the rejection reason carefully: if it cites an excluded item, check whether splitting that item out would have saved the rest of the order, and apply that lesson next time. If it cites no tracking, you probably cannot win that claim, but you can ask the portal's support team what evidence would have helped, and use that knowledge for future claims. Keep a record of declined claims by retailer, because a pattern, such as repeated declines at one store, is a signal to stop using the portal for that retailer or to switch portals. Never create duplicate accounts or rebuy items to force a claim through, since portals treat that as abuse and may close your account and forfeit pending balances.

Most declined cashback comes from broken tracking, returns, or excluded items. Prevent it with clean clicks and no outside coupons, and appeal well-documented declines with your order confirmation in hand.
