Gift cards are convenient precisely because they are simple, but that simplicity makes them a favourite tool of scammers, and balance-checking is one of the most common traps. A search for a balance-check page can surface fake sites designed to steal your card number and PIN, and a phone call from someone asking you to read out card details is almost always a scam. The safe approach is short and boring: use only the official channel printed on the card itself, and never share the full card details with anyone who contacted you first.

Start by turning the card over. Legitimate cards print a website or phone number for balance checks on the back, along with the issuer's name. That printed address is your safest route, because it comes from the issuer rather than from a search result, an advertisement, or a message. If the card has no printed balance-check method, visit the retailer's own official website by typing its address yourself or using an app you already trust, and navigate to its gift card section from there.

Fake balance-check sites are built to rank highly in search results and to look identical to the real thing, so never trust the first result blindly. Check the website address carefully for misspellings, extra words, or unusual endings, and be suspicious of any site that asks for more than the card number and PIN — or that asks you to download software, complete a survey, or pay a fee to see your balance. A genuine balance check is free, and any site charging for it is not the issuer's site.

Phone checks need the same caution. Only call the number printed on the card, never a number given to you in a text, email, or call from someone else, and never read card details to a caller who claims your card has been frozen, compromised, or selected for a refund. Real issuers do not ask you to buy gift cards to fix a problem, and they do not ask for card details to release a prize. If a caller creates urgency, hang up and call the printed number yourself.

Treat a gift card's number and PIN as cash, because in practice that is what they are: anyone who has both can usually spend the balance immediately, and stolen gift card balances are very hard to recover. Do not photograph the back of a card and share the image, do not enter details on a shared or public computer, and scratch off the PIN covering only when you are ready to use or check the card. If you receive a card as a gift, check its balance promptly, because an empty or tampered card is much easier to dispute soon after purchase while receipts still exist.

Keep the receipt or a note of the purchase details until the card is fully spent, and write down the balance after each use so you always know what should remain. If a balance check shows less than you expected, contact the issuer through its official channel with the card number, purchase receipt, and dates of use ready, and ask for a transaction history. Issuers can often trace where a balance went, and a prompt report gives you the best chance of a resolution.

If a card shows a zero balance you did not spend, act quickly: contact the issuer, report the card as compromised, and ask whether the balance can be frozen or restored. Save screenshots of the balance result and any error messages, and keep the physical card, since the issuer may need its numbers to investigate. If the card was bought from a retailer, that retailer's receipt and purchase record can support your claim, so do not throw them away until the card is empty.

If you entered card details on a site you now suspect was fake, treat the balance as at risk: spend or transfer it through the official channel immediately if possible, and report the site to the issuer and to your local fraud reporting service. The lesson is worth more than the loss — from now on, only the address printed on the card, typed by you, is a balance-check address you trust.

Checking a gift card balance safely means one habit: use only the website or number printed on the card, never share details with someone who contacted you, and treat the number and PIN like cash. That single rule defeats almost every balance-check scam in circulation.
